Although India hasn’t yet created a player who represents us in Esports, like Suma1L and Arslan Ash represent Pakistan in Esports – There are a few players in the Esports scene who have Indian roots. In this article, we will be looking at few Indian origin personalties in Esports.
Zionspartan (Counter Logic Gaming)
Darshan “Darshan” Upadhyaha, formerly known as Zionspartan, is a League of Legends player who currently plays for team Counter Logic Gaming. He plays top lane role in the team and has been on the team since the Season 5 of NA LCS. He started his profession LOL career with team Team Dynamic in February 2012 when he was in high school. Before joining CLG he was used to playing split push style which was critiqued by many as it would not have stood up against top tier teams, but after joining CLG he changed his play style. When asked he said that he never felt like playing with a team before he joined CLG which reflects on his loner attitude. His iconic champion is Jayce which he plays so well that it is a standard ban against him. With CLG, Darshan had won NA LCS Summer playoff which was their ticket to the Worlds. He was also part of Season 3 Worlds Championship analyst desk. When he was was in high school he had a celebrity status. Even his teacher would call him Zionspartan. Apart from League of Legends he wanted to take part in American Idol.
Universe (Team Secret)
Saahil “Universe” Arora is a professional Dota 2 player player from Wisconsin, USA who currently plays position 3 for team Team Secret. He is a veteran in the professional circle. Saahil started his career as the coach for Online Kingdom during the TI1. After a short stint at It’s Gosu and Quantic he joined Evil Geniuses. Universe is the most successful among all the Indian origin personalties in Esports.
He started playing hard support for EG until TI2. Post TI2 Saahil joined team Dignitas playing as offlaner for the team. It was here where he became a world renouned offlaner but Universe left Dignitas after TI3 to join Sadboys which was later acquired by EG. In Evil Geniuses Saahil gained a lot of success. In TI4 the team came 3rd and the tournament saw Saahil becoming a furious and unforgiving offlaner with his iconic heroes Faceless Void and Dark Seer. After TI4, EG went through a shuffle in their roster but Saahil remained on the team. This new EG went on to experience loads of success including the DAC and TI which boasted prize pools of 3 million USD and whooping 18 million USD respectively. Saahil is known for his calculated playstyle making little to no mistakes while making occasional plays here and there, like the famous 6 million dollar echoslam which is credited for EG winning the Aegis of the champions. Even after TI5 Saahil and EG had great results with securing top 3 in all the events they played in except for MLG Columbus. After Dotapit, during spring shuffle Saahil moved to Team Secret with EG teammate Arteezy shocking everyone in the community. Currently Saahil plays position 3 for Team Secret .Apart from Dota, Saahil likes to watch Disney movies and said that he stopped coaching people after getting scammed. Saahil’s father hails from Amritsar and his mother is from Mumbai.
BULBA (TEAM EG)
Kanishk ’Sam’ ”Bulba” Sosale was born in Banglore but his parents moved to USA when he was 1 year old. Kanishk started his Dota career back in 2007 when it was still in its nascent stages. Back in the days of Original DOTA Sam used to play in various inhouse leagues in NA and also won MYM Prime Nations 3 defeating the Ukranian squad which later became the Natus Vincere. When Dota2 came out Sam started playing for team EZ Style which later got picked but It’s Gosu. In April 2012 this squad disbanded and Sam moved to Evil Geniuses. In Evil Geniuses Bulba played with Universe and experienced mild success. After the TI2 Sam again switched team in September of 2012 and became part of the original Team Liquid Dota squad. Bubla played for almost 2 years with Team Liquid attending both TI3 and TI4. In Liquid Bulba played both as mid laner and as offlaner. He is credited for Tinker’s March of Machines build and his offlane clockwork is often feared by his opponents. After the TI4 Bulba Liquid disbanded and Sam went to Team Tinker and then again switched to Team mousesports. After coaching EG to TI5 victory Kanishk went to Team Digital Chaos. Despite having a promising lineup the team had lacklusture results. After Universe left EG his position was vacant. So Evil Geniuses called Bulba to fill in the void. Sam is really helpful to new players. Even Artour credits Sam for his success. He is double majors in biology and political science and his dream team consists of MSS, Universe, Demon, 1437 and himself which he jokingly named Team Brown.
