Yu Gi Oh Duel Links, developed by Konami, brings to mobile the action of this famous card game. You will use the main characters of the anime as your avatar, having different decks and Powers. In this article I will be talking about how to get inmersed into Yu Gi Oh! Duel Links from the point of view of someone who played this game when he was a child. I will use some basic therminology since I didn’t remember the basic of Yu Gi Oh until I played this game.
The tutorial is really well made so you will not have any problem to understand the rules. As I said before, I didn’t remember anything. I was able to make through it, enjoying the experience of reviving the duels I had when I was younger but throught my mobile phone.
Resources
The resources in the game are divided between
Energy: it is the stamina like in other games, needed to play
Gold: it is needed to buy some cards from a shopkeeper that will appear in some missions
Gems: the main currency of the game you can buy with them cards, decks or characters.
Game modes
School of combat:
- Duel quiz: they are puzzle like duels and we can gain gems there.
- Shared deck: we have a already chosen deck and we have to win with it
- Gate: the main mode to challenge characters thanks to gate keys. In this mode you can win cards, gold and keys. Also here you can unlock all characters.
PVP Arena: top lay competitive against other players, divided in:
- Ranked duels : playing with rank against other players
- Casual duels : playing not worrying about rank to practice decks or have just some fun
- Friend duels: being able to play with your friends
If you want, you can replay the match you had with the duel replay option
Characters
Each character have different powers, and they are unlocked as you gain level using that avatar. You can build a deck to make synergies with the powers they have. To put an example and make it simple:
Yami Yugi has the following power:
- Power of dark: start the match with field spell “Yami” active. Which has the following effect: “Increases the ATK and DEF of all Fiend and Spellcaster-Type monsters by 200 points. Also decreases the ATK and DEF of all Fairy-Type monsters by 200 points.” So according to this starter power (he will gain lots more after levelling up). I would recommend picking a deck with Fiend or spell-caster creatures and should avoid using fairy-type monsters.
So the fun part about the game is unlocking the different characters and try to combine their powers with decks and cards you will gain randomly from playing and buying packs.
Gameplay
As I said before at the beginning of the article, I played this card game when I was younger and I didn’t remember anything about it. The game itself its really well explained and with a really good tutorial, making you be able to get through the experience of the game pretty quickly.
The gameplay in general is really well polished, you have lots of interactions with the LP (life points) as they get lowered making you feel really part of the game. Also when you summon the core monster of that character deck (each character have a core monster, for example, Yugi has the dark magician) you have a really good animation for it.
So in terms of gameplay, its smooth and don’t feel tiring about the interactions of the duel and animations make it even more enjoyable so you can remember or know how the characters develop
Speaking of game modes, as listed before there are lots of them. From solving puzzles with a given deck to playing in PvP matches against other players to try decks and know if they work fine or not.
Rarity of cards
They are divided between Common, Rare, Super Rare and Ultra Rare, their rarity means they will be more complex cards or the most desired ones. So if you plan on building a deck, first try to know the rarity of the cards, so you can see your chances to get them when you buy packs at the shop.
Farming
You will have to do lots of duels to raise your characters level and get the most cards in your collection. The good part and challenging about this, you will know their deck after many duels so you can develop a strategy on how to face them and win. As the enemy level raise (you can select which level the enemy character will have) it will get harder but the prizes will raise as well.
There will also be events to face different duelists with other decks. Then its up to your own determination to gain those huge prizes with the extra difficulty you will have to deal. Since the most times you defeat a duelist, you will obtain different cards and other rewards aswell.
Tips and tricks
I would recommend you to visit this webpage. They update the current top tier decks and update the events that Yu Gi Oh Duel Links have in-game. They also give advice about how to defeat the duelists.
Always try to follow tier list so you know what deck to aim. Yu Gi Oh Duel Links gets better if you aim to a certain deck that you like and farm to obtain the cards.
Find a good discord/webpage/group about Yu Gi Oh Duel Links. Playing with friends and organising tournaments it’s the best way to improve and enjoy a game.
Conclusion
Yu Gi Oh Duel Links has a lot to offer if you like card games. To me this game is really refreshing. I played lots of card games online before, this one being different. Since you have characters with powers, being a bit similar to heroes of the Hearthstone game so you can synergize with that. But it’s different in terms that you have lots of grinding with other duelists, events and puzzles. To sum up, if you like card games, you should give this game a try at least.
