Mobile gamers can rejoice as Apex Legends, one of the most popular battle royale games out there, is coming to Mobile.
Developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts (EA) as a free-to-play battle royale game, Apex Legends was revealed and released on February 4, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game was largely praised by critics upon launch and managed to attract over 10 million players within it’s first 72 hours. Apex Legends surpassed over 25 million players by the end of it’s first week and 50 million players by it’s first month. The game had over 1 million concurrent players making it one of the Most Played Games by Concurrent Player Count.
In an investors call on May 7, while going over the company’s earnings over the past quarter, EA stated that Apex Legends was their fastest growing new game having a player base of over 50 million people, 30% of whom are new to an EA product. As for future plans, they said that they’re planning to add new content to Apex Legends, through long term service, such as introducing new legends, etc.
That’s not all. During the call, they revealed plans for bringing the game to new platforms and markets. As part of this approach, EA will be launching Apex Legends in China and will release the game for Mobile with plans for cross-platform support in the future.
Andrew Wilson, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of EA stated –
“As I said earlier, we are looking at how to take the game to mobile and cross-play over time, and I also expect that this game will have tremendous value in Asia, and we’re in conversations about that.”
Wilson, however, did not mention any specific date for Apex Legends’ Mobile launch but we can assume that it will be launched in Q3 or Q4 of 2019 as EA will be busy this quarter due to E3.
Once EA revealed their plans for Apex Legends’ Mobile version, many fans have tweeted asking EA to make a Nintendo Switch port too. While rumors for a Switch port have been floating around the internet ever since the game’s Mobile launch announcement, no such thing have been officially confirmed by EA. Judging by the fact that EA later plans to bring cross-platform support to the game, a Switch platform is not entirely impossible. Even if there is a chance, which is less likely, it’s not happening anytime soon as it’ll be months before EA release the game for Mobile and another few months before they bring cross-platform support to the game.
With PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) and Fortnite Battle Royale reaching masses through Mobile platform, it is about time that EA bring Apex Legends to Mobile as it is the most affordable and easily accessible platform there is. Once they bring cross-platform support to Apex Legends’ Mobile version, it might actually pose a real challenge to PUBG Mobile which is currently the most popular battle royale title for Mobile. Cross-platform is something that EA has planned for later but for now it is just a matter of months before Mobile gamers get to enjoy Apex Legends on their favourite platform.
